Project Overview
Frail older adults residing in Long Term Care (LTC) facilities have complex health needs. The majority of these adults have dementia. Family caregivers continue to provide care and support for their relatives/friends in LTC. Unfortunately when their relative is admitted to LTC, they experience major changes in their lives such as changes in their roles/relationships resulting in poor physical and mental health. They need support. Our research team has developed an online intervention for family caregivers of persons with dementia in the community (My Tools 4 Care). My Tools 4 Care seems to help family caregivers deal with the significant changes they experience. It is different from other online websites as there are activities for the caregivers to use: such as how to have hope each day. This experienced research team want to develop an online toolkit for family caregivers of frail older persons with dementia residing in LTC. We will begin by asking family caregivers what they need and will then revise My Tools 4 Care to meet their needs. Forty family caregivers will be asked to use the new toolkit for two months. They will be asked if it is easy to use, if they could use it and if they would use it. As well they will be asked how happy they are with it. We will then make any needed revisions and plan together for the next steps for its broader use. This toolkit has the potential to help family caregivers and their frail relatives.
